After training as a general nurse, Professor Sir George Castledine won a scholarship to Oxford University to study physiology and philosophy; he also went to Liverpool University to study social sciences.
Sir George then worked at a couple of hospitals as a staff nurse before moving to Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI). At MRI he became the first clinical joint appointment between the hospital and the medical school, where he became a clinical lecturer and charge nurse working on a trauma unit.
From Manchester Sir George moved to Wales, setting up the first nursing degree course linked to Cardiff Medical School and founding the Department of Nursing at the North East Institute of Higher Education. He then moved to Birmingham as Professor of Nursing and Community Health at the University of Central England, where he held the post of Assistant Dean. Sir George now holds a joint Clinical Professorship and Consultant of Nursing between the University and Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust. He has also been a visiting professor at many universities around the world and has worked in the Middle East and Africa for various aid agencies.
Sir George was made a fellow of the Royal College of Nursing in 1980 for his outstanding contribution to clinical nursing and was knighted for a lifetime of service to the health care profession in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2007.
