Investing in staff and innovation is crucial to developing service delivery

Abstract
Vision, planning and a focus on staff wellbeing is essential if the nursing and midwifery professions are to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Chief Nursing Officers for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England Anne Armstrong, Sue Tranka, Maria McIlgorm and Duncan Burton reflect on the importance of supporting nurses and midwives as their professions evolve to meet patient need.
I am delighted to mark my first International Nurses Day as Interim Chief Nursing Officer. I want to take this opportunity to thank all nurses across Scotland working in health and social care for their continued dedication to improving patient outcomes.
As this year marks 5 years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to reflect on the challenges that our nursing staff experienced during that time. I am sure that all will agree that our nurses, even in the face of adversity, have continued to deliver the highest quality of care to their patients and place the wellbeing of the individual at the centre of service delivery. As Chief Nursing Officer, I am incredibly proud of the nursing response to the pandemic, which saw nurses adapt to unthinkable pressures and change, and demonstrate the vital role the profession plays in the provision of quality care.
There continues to be exciting opportunities in Scotland following the publication of the recommendations from the Nursing and Midwifery Taskforce. I am proud to have been involved in this work and welcome the recommendations from the Taskforce, which I will continue to implement across Scotland's health and social care services, in partnership with existing services, as we strive to make Scotland the best place for nursing and midwifery staff to work.
