European Cancer Nursing Day: a call to action for equity and inclusion

Abstract
As we mark European Cancer Nursing Day, we must critically reflect on the position of cancer nursing across Europe. Innovation in cancer care continues at pace, with new novel therapies, technologies and diagnostic approaches constantly emerging.
However, questions remain about who benefits from this progress. Cancer incidence is rising and remains the leading cause of death in over 50 countries globally (Bray et al, 2024). Low- and middle-income countries face the most rapid increases in cancer burden, often without the infrastructure or workforce needed to meet demand. Even in high-income countries, disparities are evident and influenced by geography, ethnicity, education and access to health services.

Innovation is only meaningful when it is accessible. Even the most advanced treatments have limited reach without a skilled workforce, adequate infrastructure and inclusive policies. In this context, the role of cancer nurses becomes increasingly vital.
There is clear evidence that cancer nurses improve outcomes in symptom management, psychological support, patient education and continuity of care. However, the ability of nurses to fulfil this potential varies significantly across Europe.
